The ISO 9001 Quality Management System standard has been updated and is now called ISO 9001:2015.  For companies that have existing systems this brings a number of challenges, while on the surface the changes seem to be terminology focused the reality use that the challenge starts once you start trying to update your existing system.

It is very tempting for companies to get down into the detail straightaway and start looking at the bottom end of the system first with the intent that making changes to the procedures and systems that most of the people in the company are using first will be the easiest way to implement the changes throughout the company. The problem with this strategy is that very quickly you run into the restraints of having to make decisions about changes that fit in line with the system objectives in the planning side of the system. One of the key things that this new standard has is a bigger focus on how changes to the management system are planned as well is a stronger leadership and risk based thinking approach.
